With the advantage of hindsight, what seems like a sudden change can be seen for what it really is – the next step in what was building before it.
I have spent much of my career in media. And last week one of the largest operators in the industry cut 12% of their workforce across the country.
Many were shocked by the move, but if they had been paying attention to what the CEO had been saying and doing they wouldn’t have been.*
It’s easy to sit and decide in your head the way things should be. And if you think it long enough it will become reality. But when there are others involved in decision making with a different mindset and agenda, your mind’s reality isn’t going to line up with real world reality.
And the shock happens.
The lesson is to stay open and connected and avoid being someone who lives with their head in the sand. Read about your industry and company. Know the players and where the industry is headed. Change is difficult, but it’s easier to take when you can identify it and be proactive about it vs being blindsided.
