I have been making time to read more. Not a book every few days kind of time, but I constantly have a non-fiction book around to pick up and read between projects or when I have time to kill when waiting for my kids to get out of practice.
It’s a lot more productive for me than scrolling on the phone.
One concept that’s stuck with me recently from this book is the idea that we’re all stupid, and then we’re not.
Stupid is ‘the emotion associated with learning...the pre-learning is stupidity’.
When we’re faced with something we don’t know, we may feel stupid. Which is natural. But what if we embrace that and move through it and do the learning so we’re simply not stupid any more?
I didn’t know how to restore a car until I took it apart myself and put it back together. At any time I could have let the lack of knowledge hold me back, but then I’d still have a garage full of parts instead of a running and driving car.
I probably would have felt a lot more stupid if I had quit once it was in pieces.
There’s nothing to be afraid of. Don’t worry about what others think because they are all stupid too. You know things they don’t. And if you embrace the learning you will be stupid about one less thing.
